Memphis native and former art educator Pam Cobb is at home on the Tennessee River. It draws her to the curvilinear abstractions of the water, as well as the borders created by landforms. Multiple panels give pause to otherwise expressive, free-form painting, creating a history narrated by texture and form.
In many of her works, she carves into the surface, as influenced by her love for wood. Comfortable working two- and three-dimensionally, she often incorporates found objects into her art. Sculptural elements include carved borders inspired by Cherokee pottery designs, paying homage to her Native American roots.
Other artists have influenced her, but only in regard to the spirit they have brought to their own work. Fanatical about originality, she distances herself, because at the end of the day, being an artist is a solitary journey whose inspiration is rooted in nature.
